Nikon has revealed four new lenses in its latest roadmap. It has reported that there will be an affordable "holy trinity" f/2.8 lenses coming in the future. A new power zoom lens is also in development.
There will be three full-frame mirrorless lenses for its Z-mount. Another lens will arrive for the APS-C Nikon cameras. This move is expected to improve Nikon's presence in the mirrorless camera market.
The Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8 is a full-frame camera lens that provides a wide field of view. It is a little bit tighter than the Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S lens however, it is lighter at only 450g. This lens also features an STM motor for silent operation - a must for videographers.
Another lens would be the Nikon Z 70-180mm mid-telephoto lens. There are no details regarding this lens yet but based on the road map, it may have an f/2.8 aperture - similar to the Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/1.8, just with an extended range.
These two new lenses will complete the budget Z-line trinity of lenses for Nikon. Photographers may now cover a wide range by combining the Nikon Z 17-18mm f/2.8, Nikon 28-75mm f/2.8, and the latest Nikon Z 70-180mm telephoto lens.
The Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8 is priced at around $1,1995.95 while the Z 28-75mm is available for around the same price. Going by the pattern, the Z 70-180mm might be in the same price range as well making this "holy trinity" of lenses a great deal.
Lastly, Nikon DX mount users or APS-C camera users will have a new power zoom lens option. The Nikon DX 12-28mm PZ will arrive in the near future. There is no aperture detail mentioned yet at the moment.
The power zoom lens provides great autofocus performance and silent operation. This hints that Nikon might be targeting videographers since the focal length works well for vlogs and video shoots.
Nikon Might Be Rehousing Tamron Lenses
Eagle-eyed photographers noticed the striking resemblance between the Nikon 17-28mm f/2.8 lens and 28-75mm f/2.8 lens and the Tamron lenses released for Sony awhile back.
There are variations in the exterior of the lenses but the insides, especially the elements and the groupings look the same.
Another reason why there is a speculation is the new 70-180mm lens from Nikon already exists in the Tamron lens lineup.
There is nothing wrong with this type of partnership since Tamron is already a long-time lens manufacturer. However, photographers would argue that Nikon needs to be transparent if it is doing so.
Petapixel tried to reach out to Nikon regarding this matter and here is its response.
"All lenses developed by Nikon are designed to satisfy the high-quality standards defined by Nikon. We refrain from commenting on products released by other manufacturers."
Nikon users must not worry though as the majority of the Z-mount lenses are still manufactured by the company and still goes through rigorous tests during its development.
